SUNRIVER, Ore. - Freshman Jake Younan-Wise birdied each of the first two holes of the day on his way to firing a one-under par 71 to lead the Texas Tech men's golf team during its opening round at the 2006 NCAA Division I NCAA Men's Golf Championships.
As at team, the Red Raiders will enter play in Thursday's second round at the Crosswater Golf Course in tie for 27th place after firing a nine-over par team round of 297. Wake Forest leads the event after blistering the course with an 11-under par round to lead second place UCLA by two strokes. The Demon Deacon's Kyle Reifers leads the event individually after firing a first round 65.
Younan-Wise was Tech's most consistent golfer on the day ending in a tie for 28th individually after tallying four birdies. The the only blemish on the freshman's scorecard was a bogey on the 17th hole and a double bogey on the par-three seventh hole. Younan-Wise was not the only Red Raider to struggle with the seventh as senior Andrew Dresser also turned in a score of five on the hole.
Dresser was Tech's next lowest finisher, carding a two-over par round of 74 to end play in tie for 85th. Meanwhile leading scorer Oscar Floren was at even par after the first nine holes of the day, but posted a four-over on the front nine, which included a double-bogey on the eighth hole to close the day with a 76.
Freshman Brandon Lakatta also finished with a 76 after shooting even par on the final nine holes of the day after a four-over on the back nine to begin the round. Fellow rookie Santiago Rivas completed the Red Raider contingency on the day with a seven-over par 79.
