LUBBOCK, Texas - Adding to the three student-athletes who signed with the program in the fall, Texas Tech men's golf coach Greg Sands announced on Thursday that he has accepted the letters of intent of two outstanding prep golfers who will join the Red Raiders for the upcoming season.
Ray Beaufils (Clear Island Waters, Australia) and Geoff Howard (San Antonio, Texas) join the three players who signed in the fall - Will Griffin (San Antonio, Texas), Mark Jones (Odessa, Texas) and Tommy Sikes (Midland, Texas), to make up the Red Raiders incoming recruiting class.
"We are excited for these two guys that are coming in," said Sands. "Ray is a late addition, but he is a great player and one of the best in Australia. He is a member of the Queensland state team and has been playing well during the summer over there. He is a good friend of Jake Younan-Wise and we think he can be an impact player for us. Geoff is a consistent player who is coming off a great summer. He has posted several top five and top ten finishes at some AJGA events and we think we can bring some very important leadership qualities to our team."
Beaufils heads to Tech after posting an impressive amateur career in which he has been a part of the 2004 Australian National Team and the 2004 Queensland Junior Team. Individually, he has turned in a series of impressive tournaments, including a third place finish at the 2004 Queensland Junior Championship, a ninth place and 12th place finish at the 2005 and 2006 Greater International Amateur and most recently, the Australian took home fifth place at the 2006 Queensland Amateur. Currently, Beaufils is the seventh-ranked amateur in the Queensland with a 71.03 scoring average.
Howard, who attended the Marine Military Academy in San Antonio, Texas, is winding down his prep career as the 70th ranked junior according in the American Junior Golf Association. Some of his notable career finishes include a tie for sixth at the 2005 AJGA OSSO Junior at Oak Tree in Edmond, Okla., a tie for fifth in the 2005 AJGA Stars of Texas Junior even held in Austin, Texas, and a second place finish in which he ended with a final round 66 at the 2005 AJGA Valero Texas Open Junior Shootout.
