SUNRIVER, Ore. - On cool, rainy day at the Crosswater Golf Course, the Texas Tech men's golf team turned in a second round score of 290, marking a seven stroke improvement from the team's opening round. At the completion of the second round, the Red Raiders sit in a tie for 18th place at 11-over par.
The Red Raiders will need to climb into the top 15 after Friday's third round to qualify for the final round of the event, which will tee off on Saturday morning.
"It seems like things are just not happening for us like we would like them to, but we still have another round for us to make a move and climb into the top 15," said head coach Greg Sands. "I think our team has played a lot better this season when our backs are against the wall."
Freshman Jake Younan-Wise was again Tech's best player on the day, firing a two-under par 70. The Kingscliff, Australia, native completed his round in a tie for 13th place at the event with a two-round total of 141. Younan-Wise was most impressive on the back nine where he birdied six holes but suffered a setback on the par-five 12th hole with score of nine. The rookie will take a lot of momentum into Friday's third round as he sunk a 45-foot put to birdie the 18th and final hole of the day.
"Jake is really hitting the ball well off the tee and is also rolling it well on the greens," Sand said. "The thing that he is doing really well this week is hitting his short irons, which is something that he has struggled with at times this year."
Junior Oscar Floren, Tech's leading scorer on the season, rebounded after four-over par opening round with a two-under scorecard of 70 on Thursday. The Ljungskile Sweden, native, used four birdies on the back-nine to climb into a tie for 63rd place.
After firing a 74 in the opening round on Wednesday, senior Andrew Dresser turned in a three-over par 75 on the day, giving him a two-round total of 149. Freshmen Brandon Lakatta and Santiago Rivas completed the Tech's squad as both players ended their rounds with a two-day total of 154 at the event.
Texas Tech men's golf is back in action on Friday with the third round from the Crosswater Golf Course and live scoring is available on www.golfstat.com. The Red Raiders are set to tee of at 12 p.m. local time.
