LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech sophomores Shannon Sims and Tina Rincon and freshman Colleen Pitts will travel with their respective club teams to the 2006 US Youth Soccer National Championship Series. Sims and Rincon will compete with their Sting Royal team in the U19 age division, while Pitts will make the trip with the Dallas Texans North in the U18 division. The tournament will be held at the James W. Cownie Soccer Park in Des Moines, Iowa, beginning on July 26.
Sims and Rincon helped to knock out the North Carolina CASL Spartan Elite 1-0 on their way to a 2006 US Youth Soccer Southern Regional title and a berth at the upcoming national tournament.
The Dallas Texans North '88, with Pitts in tow, dominated the Georgia PTC Lazers Elite at the regionals. They punched through three goals and shut out their opponents in order to gain the championship title.
Sims (Plano, TX) is one of TTU's premier returning midfielders, while Rincon (Carrolton, TX) will be the lone returning goalkeeper after redshirting last season. Pitts (Dallas, TX) is an incoming freshman for the Red Raiders who will also compete for time as a goalkeeper.
The US Youth Soccer National Championships cap a yearlong series of competitions for boys and girls teams in multiple age brackets as teams earn their way from the top teams in their state to the regional championship tournaments. Approximately 185,000 players on more than 10,000 teams from US Youth Soccer's 55 State Associations have had the opportunity to showcase their soccer skills against the best competition in the nation while emphasizing teamwork, discipline and fair play. The National Championships feature the top four teams in each age division.
