LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech football wrapped up its first two-a-day session of fall camp today as the Red Raiders completed a morning and late afternoon practice.
The Red Raiders hit the practice fields just before 9 a.m. today and went through its normal practice session minus the special team's period. The special team's period was held over to the afternoon practice in order to shave some time off the morning session. The Tech defense took control of the morning practice during the team periods and several "lively" plays ensued on both sides of the ball. True freshman running back Baron Batch (Midland, Texas) continues to be impressive as he saw significant time running with the first team offense during the team period.
"We have had some young defensive lineman step up and that has given us some depth," said head coach Mike Leach. "They have allowed our veterans to go longer because they are fresher. Rather than individually, they are really coming together as a unit."
Following early afternoon meetings, the Red Raiders hit the practice fields again at 4:30 for their second workout of the day. Temperatures for the afternoon practice neared the upper 90's but were relieved a bit by a slight wind from the southwest.
The quarterback race continues to be hotly contested between sophomore Graham Harrell (Ennis, Texas) and redshirt freshman Chris Todd (Elizabethtown, Ken.). Both Harrell and Todd came away with big plays during the day and according to head coach Mike Leach, the job is still up for grabs.
"Both of these guys have steadily improved," commented Mike Leach following Saturday afternoon's session. "That started in the spring and I think both have become a little better than I expected."
The Red Raiders will hit the practice fields just one time on Sunday afternoon. That session is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
