LUBBOCK, Texas - When Texas Tech takes the field against SMU in two weeks, the Red Raiders will do so as the nation's 25th-ranked program, according to the initial 2006 Associated Press Poll. The ranking also marks the first time in program history that Texas Tech has been ranked in back-to-back preseason AP polls.
Dating back to the 2004 season, the Red Raiders have been ranked 17-straight weeks in the Associated Press Poll. Tech's wire-to-wire rankings last season were a first for the program, making the current 17-week streak the longest.
Texas Tech finished the 2005 season with a 9-3 overall record and 6-2 mark in conference play. The Red Raiders' conference record gave the team a second-place finish in the Big 12 South Division, its highest in the 10-year existence of the conference. The Red Raiders closed the season with the program's third appearance at the prestigious AT&T Cotton Bowl against Alabama.
Several Red Raider opponents from the upcoming season also found a spot on the poll as Texas (3), Oklahoma (10) and TCU (22) were among the top 25. Texas A&M, UTEP and Iowa State also received votes.
Earlier this month the Red Raiders received a No. 25 ranking in the preseason USA Today Coaches Poll.
Texas Tech opens the 2006 season against the Mustangs at Jones AT&T Stadium on Sat., Sept. 2, at 6 p.m.
