Tech Falls in First Match of 2006 Campaign

EL PASO, Texas - Texas Tech opened the year with a loss on the road to Sacramento State at the Ready One Sun Bowl Invitational hosted by UTEP. The Red Raiders fell to the Hornets 3-1 (18-30, 23-30, 30-25, 26-30).
Tech started the match with a slow performance during the first game, but picked up the pace in the following three games. The Red Raiders jumped out 3-0 during game two, but dropped the next eight points. They eventually fell to Sacramento State 23-30.
During game three, the two squads battled back and forth with points until the score was eventually tied at 25. Texas Tech broke away and scored the final five game points to win 30-25.
Entering game four, Tech gained the momentum early with five straight points to which the Hornets answered with a time out. The Red Raiders led by six points on two occasions, at 9-3 and 11-5. With Tech leading 18-13, Sacramento State struck back with seven points to take the lead 18-20. Despite a last minute effort by Tech to bring the game 26-29, the Hornets converted on defense to take the win.
Junior Amy Charlebois had an impressive stand against the Hornets with nine total blocks (three solo, six assisted) and led the team in kills with 15. Junior Amanda Hiller led in digs with 14 and added two service aces on the offensive side. Emily Ziegler led in assists with 33.
Sacramento State finished with a .230 hitting percentage and had four Hornets in double figures on kills. Rose Burke put in 54 assists, while two Hornets added six blocks each.
