LUBBOCK, Texas - With not much rain to speak of over the course of a hot summer, a brief early evening shower provided a welcome change in temperature and kicked off the first day of Texas Tech's on-field preparations for the 2006 football season.
The Red Raiders opened fall camp in shorts and helmets and worked out on the practice fields on the south side of the Football Training Facility. The kicking units broke in the new FieldTurf surface in Jones AT&T Stadium during the 6:30 p.m. workout.
"It felt good," place kicker Alex Trlica said of the new surface. "It was a little loose, but another week or two it should be settled. I like the fact that it's not crowned anymore. You don't feel like you're going down or uphill."
Twenty-three members of the 2006 signing class participated in their first practices, along with seven preferred walk-ons.
The Red Raiders will hold their second practice Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Workouts are open to the public.
