LUBBOCK, Texas - For the third straight season, Texas Tech's Alex Reyes is a candidate for the Ray Guy Award that is presented annually to the top collegiate punter.
Reyes, a senior from Allen, Texas, is one of five Big 12 players competing for the award that is handed out each season by the Greater Augusta Sports Council at the ESPN Home Depot College Football Award Show in December. He joins Daniel Sepulveda (2004 winner) of Baylor, Justin Brantly (Texas A&M), Tim Reyer (Kansas State) and Kansas' Kyle Tucker.
So far this season, Reyes has been stellar for the Red Raiders and just this past week against UTEP he registered punts of 61 and 45 yards respectively. He has six punts for a total of 284 yards and an average of 47.3 yards-per-punt.
Reyes has a career punt average of 42.9 yards-per-punt and is on track to become the top punter in school history as he trails Maury Buford (1978-82) who averaged 43.2 during his career.
