LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech women's tennis returned to practice today after competing in the 2006 Baylor Invitational in Waco, Texas. Tech's doubles led the way with all three pairs at least reaching the semi-finals.
In doubles action, the first team of senior Lakann Wagley and junior Janet Durham took wins in the gold bracket over Tulsa's Santie Delport and Marta Marcinkowska and Baylor's Zuzana Zemenova and Jessica Zok. Unfortunately, the pair couldn't hold off Baylor's top-ranked team of Zuzana Cerna and Lenka Broosova, falling 8-4. Tech's second hard-hitting duo of freshman Kerryn Potgieter and Samantha van der Drift scraped their way through the green bracket, winning all four matches and defeating Oklahoma's Kate Purice and Christi Baxley in the finals, 8-5. Rounding up the Lady Raiders third team was sophomore Anne Sophie Fankam and junior-transfer Brenna Jackson who competed in the white bracket. After receiving a first-round bye, the two swept by ACU, 8-2, and just came up short in the semi-finals against Monica Neveklovska and Hillary Collins from SMU, 8-5.
Singles competition showcased Tech versus TCU in two matches in the gold draw. First, Potgieter went up against Tulsa's Kindsay Grimes losing 6-0, 6-2. Second, Tech's Durham took on Lata Assudani from Sam Houston State, capturing the first-round win, 6-3, 6-3. Next, Durham faced second-ranked Zuzana Cerna from Baylor, falling 6-1, 6-1. In the green draw, Tech had two Lady Raiders playing, Wagley faced OU's Chelsea Orr and van der Drift went against Pamela Martinez from Lamar. Wagley worked her way into the quarterfinals with wins over Oklahoma and ACU, but was haulted by SMU's Claire Rietsch, 6-1, 6-4, who went on to win the tournament. Van der Drift took the win from Martinez but also fell short of a win over Tiffany Lee from Rice, 6-3, 7-5.
It was Tech's Fankam who went the furthest in singles competition, reaching the semi-finals of the tournament. Fankam took down Oklahoma, UT-Arlington and Lamar, until finally was over- come by Rice's Rebecca Lin, 6-1, 6-0, who also went on to win the green consolation bracket. The final Lady Raider to compete in singles action was Jackson, a junior transfer from Midwestern State. Jackson went toe-to-toe with Jo-Ann Van Aerde from Louisville, taking the win in the third set, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0(13). However, Jackson couldn't beat ACU's Sarah Drummond, losing 6-4, 6-1.
