LUBBOCK, Texas - Conference season moves on for the Red Raiders as Tech has two tough road matches during the week of September 18. Texas Tech is coming off of week one in Big 12 play with two losses. After sweeping three opponents this season, the Red Raiders have found themselves on the other side of the court following a sweep at Texas and in their first home match against Colorado.
Texas Tech will hit the road on Wednesday and travel to Waco, Texas, to face the Baylor Bears. Baylor is coming off of their second loss and first in the Big 12. The Bears were swept by Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, by scores of 26-30, 27-30, 25-30. The loss moved Baylor to an overall record of 12-2 with a conference record of 1-1.
Baylor's first Big 12 match-up was against the Kansas State Wildcats, who were ranked 24th in the nation. The Bears were defeated in the first frame 30-24, but were determined to battle back at home. The Bears took the next three games, 30-28, 30-22, 30-25, to win 3-1 against the Wildcats in front of 567 at the Ferrell Center.
The Red Raiders have struggled thus far in conference season, having not won a game against then-No. 5 Texas and Colorado. Tech lost to Texas 21-30, 19-30, 28-30 and to Colorado 27-30, 28-30, 22-30.
Senior Philister Sang had a non-conference average of 4.70 kills per game on .301 hitting. During the two Big 12 matches, Sang's averages have fallen to 3.50 kills per game on .131 hitting. Leading in assists during the first 10 matches was Emily Ziegler, who averaged 7.26 assists per game. During conference season, Holly Hicks has led the team with 32 assists with an average of 5.33 per game. Jenn Harrell previously had an average of 3.62 digs per game, but has fallen to 2.75 in the two Big 12 games.
Despite the rough road matches ahead, Tech will be looking to get back on their pre-conference track. Following the match at Baylor, the Red Raiders will travel to Lincoln, Neb., to face their toughest opponent yet in the nation's No. 1 squad. The team returns home for two straight matches to be played at the United Spirit Arena.
