LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech volleyball team will travel to Lincoln, Neb., in hopes of upsetting the nation's number one team, the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Tech is coming off of a heart-breaking loss to Baylor in which the Red Raiders took the Bears to five games and lost in frames of 30-28, 23-30, 27-30, 30-17, 13-15.
Tech is still looking for their first conference victory as they are currently at 0-3 in the conference, with a 7-5 overall record. The Red Raiders have never won a match in Lincoln, as the only Tech victory in the series happened in Lubbock, Texas.
The Red Raiders put up a strong front against the Bears on Wednesday in Waco, Texas, as the team found help from all sides of the court. Two Raiders recorded double-doubles, while a different teammate led in each of the following categories: kills, assists, digs and blocks. Two Red Raiders notched double-digits in kills with four doing so in digs.
Philister Sang led the way with 28 kills and 11 digs, with Kiley Lyons pitching in 10 kills and 21 digs. Amanda Hiller tallied 13 digs and Lindsey Louis added 10. Emily Ziegler had a season-high 54 assists while also leading with three aces. Sang and Alicia Ostmeyer knocked down six blocks each.
Despite out-hitting the Bears .223 to .218, the Red Raiders now have to face a Nebraska squad who is averaging .303 on hitting. Hitting is down for the Cornhuskers during conference season though, as the team is at .224. They are allowing an even lower hitting average by their opponent during conference play though, with .099 compared to an overall .117.
Nebraska is currently 10-0 and 3-0 in the Big 12. Only on one occasion have the Huskers not swept their opponent with Minnesota having taken one game against Nebraska. The Huskers went on to win that match 3-1.
The Tech vs. Nebraska match is set to get underway at 2 p.m. at the Nebraska Coliseum. CSTV will be showing the action on tape-delay on Sunday, September 24, at 7 p.m.
