RED RAIDERS AND CYCLONES
Texas Tech holds a 6-1 series record against Iowa State, dating back to the 1967 season, when the Red Raiders began a four-game win streak against the Cyclones. ISU picked up its first win in 2002 and Tech has taken the last two, including last season's 42-26 victory in Ames. The Red Raiders are averaging 37.0 points under Mike Leach.
ROAD TO THIS POINT
The Red Raiders are 4-1 (0-1 in Big 12 play) on the season and are coming off a 75-7 win over Northwestern State in the final non-conference tilt of the season. Texas Tech opened the season with wins over three-straight Conference USA opponents, before dropping its conference opener at Oklahoma State, 49-45, two weeks ago. The Cyclones dropped to 1-4 and 0-1 in league action after a 35-17 loss at Nebraska last Saturday. Iowa State opened the season with losses to Kent State and Northern Iowa, before winning its annual rivalry game against Iowa. A loss to Toledo preceded the Nebraska loss.
RED RAIDERS IN THE POLLS
Texas Tech did not receive votes this week. Red Raider opponents earning top 25 status include Texas (19/16), Oklahoma (10/10) and Missouri (17/17). (AP/USA Today)
ON THE HORIZON
Texas Tech wraps up its three-game homestand next week against Texas A&M. The Red Raiders travel to Missouri (Oct. 20) before returning home to face Colorado (Oct. 27). Two road games at Baylor (Nov. 3) and Texas (Nov. 10) precede the regular-season finale against Oklahoma (Nov. 17) at Jones AT&T Stadium.
SCORING OUTPUT AMONG SCHOOL'S BEST
Texas Tech's 75 points against Northwestern State rank fourth on the school's all-time scoring list and marks the seventh 70+ game in the program's history and third under Mike Leach.
TEXAS TECH ON HOMECOMING DAY
The Red Raiders have won 13 of their last 15 homecoming dates, including the 2003 matchup against Iowa State, a 52-21 victory. Missouri snapped a four-game homecoming win streak last year by Tech, claiming a 38-21 win.
TURNAROUND ON THIRD DOWN
After finishing the 2006 season in a disappointing 73rd place, Texas Tech has dramatically improved itself in third-down situations. Through five games, the Red Raiders rank sixth nationally with a 55.4 percent success rate on third downs (36-of-65).
PASSING GAME MATCHES GAME TD RECORD
Two quarterbacks, Graham Harrell and Taylor Potts, combined for eight touchdown passes in Saturday's win over Northwestern State. The total matches the school record set first against Texas A&M in 2003 and matched later that season at Baylor.
DEFENSE THRIVES IN FIRST GAME UNDER RUFF
The Texas Tech defense responded to the change in defensive coordinators last week with an impressive performance against Northwestern State. After holding the Demons to 126 yards in the first half, the Red Raiders turned it up a notch and held NSU to minus-eight yards in the second half. The 118 yards of total offense is a defensive record for Tech.
Debut of Coach Ruff's Defense
- Tech limited NSU to one second half first down and nine for the game
- Five of NSU's first downs came in the first quarter
- Tech stifled the Demons to the tune of 2.1 yards per play
- NSU completed only 40 percent of its passes against a stingy Tech secondary
TD-to-INT RATIO IS STAGGERING
Accuracy has been a trademark early this season for the Texas Tech passing game. Red Raider quarterbacks have thrown 27 touchdown passes and only two interceptions in five games. The ratio is 13.5:1 (TD-INT). Last year's squad had the best ratio in school history for a season at 3.5:1.
RUNNING OUT OF THINGS TO SAY
WR Michael Crabtree's debut at Texas Tech has been nothing short of outstanding, impressive, sensational, etc.... The redshirt freshman is having arguably the best freshman season in NCAA history for a receiver and leads the nation in receptions, receptions per game, touchdowns and scoring. In five games, Crabtree has 60 receptions for 920 yards and 14 touchdowns. He has four three-TD games and one two-score outing. Other Crabtree Notables
- Tied the NCAA freshman record with his 14th TD catch of the season

- Only player in school history to begin career with five multi-TD games
HARRELL MOVING UP QUICKLY
With his performance at Oklahoma State, Harrell vaulted from sixth to third place on the Tech career passing yardage list, leaving Zebbie Lethridge, Billy Joe Tolliver and B.J. Symons in his wake. He trails second place by 660 yards after Saturday's 338-yard performance against Northwestern State. He also has made his mark on the career touchdown passes list and is in second place with 65 career scoring strikes, while his 24 TD passes this season rank seventh on the single-season list.
