LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Chancellor Kent Hance, in conjunction with the athletics department, will host a luncheon kicking off a fund drive for the newly-created Spike Dykes Endowment, which will fund a football scholarship for perpetuity.
"Spike Dykes helped establish the foundation that Texas Tech Football was built on and as a result we are more successful today because of him," Hance said. "Join me as we recognize his contributions and ensure through this endowment that his impact is forever felt."
The luncheon is scheduled for Fri., Oct. 12, at the City Bank Conference Room in United Spirit Arena. Doors open at 11 a.m. and the program will begin at noon. A table of eight is available for $1,000, while single tickets are $75. A Leadership Gift donation can be made for $5,000. All donations are tax deductible, and those who donate a Leadership gift will receive two complimentary tickets and recognition at the event.
Texas Tech's all-time winningest coach with 82 career victories, Dykes led the Red Raider program for 13 seasons and was a three-time Southwest Conference Coach of the Year. He also was the first recipient of Big 12 Coach of the Year honors in 1996. Dykes coached first team All-Americans in six-straight seasons and was the first coach in the country to produce two Doak Walker Award winners (Bam Morris, 1993 / Byron Hanspard, 1996).
"Spike is a valuable part of Texas Tech Football history," Texas Tech Director of Athletics Gerald Myers said. "He played a big part in laying the ground work for many of the things the Red Raider Football program enjoys today."
The Texas Sports Hall of Fame recently announced Dykes as one of its inductees in the upcoming class. In 1991, he was inducted into the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor.
