Tucson, Ariz. - No. 4 Arizona improved to 6-2 on the season as Taryn Mowatt no-hit the Red Raiders (and struck out 14) and won, 1-0, in first-day action at the Worth Wildcat tournament. But, Texas Tech had its chances and got a solid performance from freshman pitcher Ashly Jacobs who took the loss (3-2) after allowing one run and scattering five hits.
Arizona opened the scoring in the third when, with one out, Caitlin Lowe singled, stole second and scored on a two-out single by third baseman Janae Leles. The Red Raiders got out of potential further damage when right fielder Whitney Riley came up with a perfect strike on a Chelsie Mesa single and gunned Kristie Fox down at the plate to end the inning.
Texas Tech mounted a threat in the top of the fourth when Montana Patin, Jennifer Corkin and Riley each drew consecutive walks. But, starter Taryn Mowatt struck out Robyn Wike and Jennifer Bowers and then retired Natalie Kula on a ground ball to short.
In the Red Raider fifth, shortstop Heather Parker drew a walk, advanced to second on a Devin Zaragoza sacrifice and went to third on a two-out wild pitch. But, again, Mowatt came up with the big strikeout, this time to Patin to end the inning.
Play at the Worth Wildcat continues tomorrow when the Red Raiders face the Temple Owls (0-2) and Middle Tennessee State (1-1) in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at noon (CT).
