LUBBOCK, Texas - Last week? Won an East Coast tournament. This week? Head to a West Coast tournament.
Texas Tech captured the crown at the Pepsi Classic FAU tournament, with a 4-1 record at the event, including a win over Illinois, 7-0, in the championship game. The Red Raiders also picked up a single-game win at Florida International in Miami and find themselves off to the second-best start (against DI opponents) in the program's history at 11-5. (The 1998 team opened with a 21-4 record.) Up next, is a weekend on the other coast, at Fullerton's Worth Tournament, where Texas Tech will face Nevada (5-10), No. 12 Northwestern (10-5), No. 8 Stanford (14-2), San Diego State (8-6) and Cal Poly (10-4).
Tech faced Nevada at the opening ASU tournament and won, 11-1 (5), but since opening 0-6, Nevada has posted a 5-4 record with wins over Long Beach State, Illinois-Chicago and Penn State. This will be just the second meeting between the two schools.
No. 12 Northwestern was the national runner up last year and the Wildcats have posted wins against then No. 2 Arizona State, No. 6 Oregon State, No. 8 Stanford and No. 11 Cal. The two teams met last year at Fullerton, with Northwestern beating Tech, 7-0. Texas Tech holds a 2-1 all-time advantage against Northwestern, having beaten the Wildcats twice in the 1999 season.
San Diego State enters the Fullerton tournament with a few big wins already this season, including a 1-0 win over No. 6 Oregon State and a 3-0 win over No. 10 Texas. Texas Tech holds a 3-2 series advantage with the Aztecs, the teams having last met in 2000 when the programs split games.
No. 8 Stanford head coach John Rittman is no stranger to Tech head coach Teresa Wilson, as the coached together at Minnesota and Washington, prior to arrival to the Cardinal program in the summer of 1996. Tech is 0-7 against Stanford all time, the most recent with the Cardinal having beaten the Red Raiders, 8-0, in 2006. It may be fun to see who can steal signs first?
Cal Poly and Texas Tech have only met once, in 2000--the Mustangs won, 2-0. coach wilson No. 800 watch
Teresa Wilson is now 11 wins shy of the 800 mark. She's down-playing that; we're not.
