Postgame Notes
February 03, 2007 | Baseball
- Texas Tech kicked off its 58th season of collegiate baseball today as the Red Raiders opened the season against Stephen F. Austin. The Red Raiders are now 36-22 on opening day and 23-8 when opening the season at home. Tech has now won eight-straight season openers since falling to New Mexico nine years ago today (Feb. 3, 1998).
- Four Red Raiders (all newcomers) earned starting jobs in today's game: Freshman Joey Kenworthy (Houston, Texas) started at second, junior transfer Geoff Byrns (Concord, Calif) got the nod in left field, freshman designated hitter Taylor Ashby (Lubbock, Texas) stood in as the designated hitter and junior transfer Doug Thennis (Cirrus Heights, Calif.) earned the job at third base.
- Today's game went to 11 innings, marking the first time in school history that Tech has played extra innings on opening day. The last time Tech played in extra innings was last season (April 29) when Nebraska defeated the Red Raiders 4-3 in 12 frames.
- Kyle Martin and Geoff Byrns hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Tech its first two runs of the game. The last time Tech hit back-to-back home runs was last season against Baylor (April 1) when Roger Kieschnick and Martin hit a pair against the Bears in the fifth inning.
- Tech kicked off the 2007 season with a perfect game defensively and it marked Tech's first error free game since a tilt against Nebraska in last year's Big 12 Tournament. Last season, it took the Red Raiders nine games before they were finally able to come away error free.
