Red Raiders Earn Thirteen Regional Marks to Open Season

TUCSON, Ariz. - In the first weekend of competition in the outdoor season, the Texas Tech track team finished with 13 qualifying marks at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Ariz. Along the way, two school records fell and 14 personal bests were met for returning Red Raiders.
In the men's 400M hurdles, seniors Bryan Scott and Marlon Odom both reached regional marks and ran personal bests. Scott titled the event in a clocking of 49.78, while Odom finished third with a run of 51.95. Odom also qualified in the 110M hurdles after running a field best time of 13.67.
After just missing All-America status at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships, the men's 4x400M relay squad started the season Saturday with a regional mark of 3:07.60. In similar fashion with the indoor national meet, Rodney Mims, Scott, Tim Foster and Brandon Washington ran for the Red Raider relay.
In her first outdoor competition as a Tech member, freshman Sandra Iwunze finished third in the women's 400M hurdles. The Houston, Texas, native clocked a time of 59.88 to earn her first regional mark and also break the school record which was previously 1:00.74 set by Tia Barginear in 2006.
Resetting her own school record was junior Julianne Kennedy in the women's heptathlon. The Sherman, Texas, native previously set the mark at 5,104 points but scored 5,147 at the Jim Click Combined on Thursday and Friday. She finished with a personal best in the 100M hurdles with a time of 14.42, the high jump with a height of 5'-9.25" and the javelin with a throw of 116'-4" beating her previous best by over 22 feet.
In the pole vault, three Red Raiders met the appropriate mark to compete at the NCAA Midwest Regional in May. On the women's side, indoor national qualifier Lindsey Walesheck finished first after clearing 13'-1.5", a new PR, while Amanda Alley tied for fourth with a height of 12'-5.5", tying her personal best. For the men, Seth Harris notched his second qualifying mark of the young outdoor season as he cleared 16'-6.75" to tie for first.
For the field events, Tech finished with three additional qualifying marks. Junior Bobby Evers took top honors in the men's long jump after leaping 24'-9.25" to qualify. Senior Lacy Wilson cleared 5'-10.75" in the women's high jump, while D'Andra Carter threw for 176'-1" in the women's discus.
Other running events reaching the required mark were in the women's 1500M and men's 400M. Irene Kimaiyo ran a time of 4:25.59 to mark a personal best and regional mark in the 1500M. Freshman Brandon Washington finished first in the men's 400M with a clocking of 46.59 to earn his first regional mark as a Red Raider.
Texas Tech and Kansas State combined to form the Big 12 contingent in the Jim Click Shootout. The two conference members finished with a combined 440 points, placing third. The Pac-10, formed by Arizona and California, notched 513.5 points, while SEC members South Carolina, Arkansas (women) and Florida (men) scored 451.5 points.
Outdoor season rolls on for the Red Raiders as they host their only outdoor meet of the season next weekend. Action from Lubbock for the Texas Tech Open will begin on Sat., March 24th, at 10 a.m. Complete results will be posted online at www.texastech.com as soon as they become available.
