LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team traveled to Canyon, Texas, to face West Texas A&M for one of the their 5 spring dates. The Red Raiders shut-out the Buffalos, 6-0, on Monday evening.
Texas Tech gained the advantage midway through the first half when junior forward Priscilla Esquivel tallied a goal from a Brittney Harrison cross. The game went into halftime with Tech leading 1-0.
Tech's offense came out strong in the second half. Freshman midfielder Zhaleh Rezaie recorded the second goal of the match with a strike from long distance. Rezaie took the ball in stride and slammed it into the lower corner of the net from 30 yards. Esquivel continued the scoring streak and tallied her second goal of the match with a long distance shot that sailed over the keepers head. The Red Raiders, not leading the Buffs 3-0, were in full stride. Junior forward Kim Cypert tabbed in another goal for Tech from a cross from Emmie Bennett after good work from Chessa Purser to win the ball at the near post. Purser, a sophomore forward, recorded the last two goals for the Red Raiders. The first was an opportunistic finish at the front post, and the second was a break away 1 vs. 1 against the Buff's keeper. Purser broke through the defense and after a 50-yard run clipped the ball past the on-coming goalkeeper.
Tech's team defense was solid as they shut-out the Buffs for a final score of 6-0.
"I was very pleased with the way we played this evening. We dictated the rhythm of the game and moved the ball well for most of the match. It was nice to see us shooting the ball from distance and we got some nice goals as a result. Credit must go to Coach Lauffer, as he has a very nice team. They are well organized and hard working. They had chances but our keepers were alert and dealt with each chance efficiently."
The Red Raiders continue their spring season April 15 when they host UTEP at 3 p.m. The match is set to play at the new soccer facility located at 10th and Memphis. Tech will face West Texas A&M at R.P. Fuller Stadium on April 24 at 7 p.m. The match against West Texas A&M will not be played at the new facility due to the need for lighting.
