LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech soccer defeated UTEP Sunday afternoon, 2-1. The Red Raiders played at the new facility for the first time.
The match against UTEP was the third spring season match for Texas Tech. They are 2-1 on the spring season after defeating West Texas A&M, 6-0. The match against UTEP went into the second half scoreless.
UTEP gained the lead after a long free kick that was served deep into Texas Tech's box. The ball was flicked into the net.
The Red Raiders countered almost immediately with a goal by Emmie Bennett. Bennett took the ball down the right side, cut inside her defender and bent a shot to the far corner of the goal. Zhaleh Rezaie tallied the second goal for the Red Raiders when the UTEP defender turned into her own net.
"This is a nice win for us, and a good way to start on our new field," said head coach Neil McGuire. "We played with poise, passion, and a great deal of discipline in a game that could have gone either way. UTEP is a talented team who are very well organized by Coach Cross. We lost to them in both 2005 and 2006 so to be able to come away with a win is a good indication of how our team is progressing. The players should be proud of themselves."
Texas Tech will face West Texas A&M for it's fourth match in the spring season. The match is set for April 24, at 6 p.m.
