Freshman Flemons Captures Triple Jump Gold at Drake Relays

DES MOINES, Iowa - In front of the 42nd-consecutive Drake Relays Saturday sellout, Texas Tech freshman Anthony Flemons was crowned the triple jump champion at the 98th edition of the meet. The Red Raiders completed the event with nearly every competitor meeting the regional mark in the respective events.
Flemons was the highlight of the day for the Tech team as he jumped a distance of 52'-9.25" in the triple jump. The Drake Relays marks the first time the Childress, Texas, native is competing in the triple jump for the Red Raiders during the outdoor. He qualified for nationals during indoor season. Flemons' mark was over a foot longer than second place Nick Brown of Illinois, who finished with 51'-7.25". The distance of 52'-9.25" currently sits as the fourth best in the nation. Flemons adds the regional mark to his long jump qualification from Friday's afternoon program.
Senior Zach Glavash, an indoor All-American from a year ago, notched his first regional mark in the men's 800M during Saturday's events. The product of Chillicothe, Ill., ran a time of 1:49.88 to place sixth in the field of 12.
Red Raider men finished two-three in the men's 400M hurdles, with both Bryan Scott and Jansen Hyde clocking regional marks. Senior Lubbock native Scott ran a second-place time of 49.81, his second-fastest run in the event and third top mark in Tech history. Hyde ran a personal best time of 50.67 to finish in bronze position. The sophomore from Poteet, Texas, now sits with the eighth-fastest collegiate mark in the nation, moving up from 50th place with an altitude-adjusted time of 52.00.
After clocking the school record and the top prelim time, senior Marlon Odom finished with the bronze in the 110M hurdle finals. The Killeen, Texas, native ran a wind-aided mark of 13.71.
Three Red Raider women placed tenth in their events with repeat regional marks. Senior Lacy Wilson finished the high jump after clearing a height of 5'-9.75". In the 3000M steeplechase, senior Katie Leonard finished with her second regional mark after running a time of 10:49.19, her second best time. Freshman Sandra Iwunze placed 10th in the 400M hurdles with a time of 1:00.01, her fourth-career regional qualification.
In the women's 1500M run, sophomore Asia Diaz has a personal best run of 3:44.56 to finish 11th.
The men's 4x400M relay, who qualified for Saturday's final with a run of 3:08.39 in the prelims to finish sixth, closed out the Drake Relays with fourth place. The team of Rodney Mims, Bryan Scott, and Tim Foster with Brandon Washington as the anchor leg had a run of 3:07.73.
