Oklahoma State In Town For Senior Weekend
The Texas Tech Red Raiders find themselves in desperate need of a series win this weekend over Oklahoma State in order to stay in the running for a spot in the upcoming Big 12 Conference Baseball Championship at Bricktown Ballpark in late May. The Oklahoma State series will mark the first of four-straight home games and the last at Dan Law Field this season. The three-game series against the Cowboys will get underway at 6:30 p.m. on Friday and will continue at 2 p.m. on Saturday. The series will conclude at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
After suffering a series sweep two weeks ago at Missouri, the Red Raiders currently stand in ninth place in the Big 12 Conference standings but are just one game out of seventh place. Four of the bottom five teams (including Texas Tech; Kansas is off this weekend) face difficult series this weekend and a series win by either Tech, Kansas State, Baylor or Oklahoma could go a along way in clinching one of the last remaining spots in the Big 12 Championship.
The Red Raiders will face a daunting task this weekend as they face the No. 19 Oklahoma State Cowboys who come to Lubbock fresh off a Bedlam Series sweep of Oklahoma. The Cowboys boast the top offensive attack in the Big 12 with a team batting average of .331 and 69 home runs. Oklahoma State is led by former Tech pitching coach Frank Anderson who is in his fourth season in Stillwater.
Texas Tech Baseball will honor its six seniors on Sunday afternoon prior to first pitch. Chris Ortmeier, Travis Young, Kyle Martin, Aaron Odom, Trey Schurr and Colt Hynes will all being playing their final home games starting this weekend.
All three of the games will be broadcast live on the Texas Tech Sports Network and Sunday's game will be carried across the nation on Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 130.
A Look At Oklahoma State
The Oklahoma State Cowboys head to the South Plains fresh of a Bedlam Series sweep of arch rival Oklahoma last weekend and enter Friday night's game with an overall record of 34-13. With a 13-8 mark in Big 12 Conference play, the Cowboys currently sit in third place in the Big 12 standings just ahead of Texas A&M's record of 11-9. OSU is led by former Tech assistant coach Frank Anderson who is in his fifth season at the helm of the Cowboy program.
Offensively, the Cowboys are the best in the Big 12 as they enter the weekend with a dangerous .331 team batting average along with a conference-best 69 home runs. The squad also leads the league in on-base percentage (.415) and slugging percentage (.544). Left fielder Ty Wright is one of two Cowboys hitting over .400 on the season as he leads the squad and the Big 12 with a .441 clip while Tyler Mach is hitting .406 (third in the league). Corey Brown is the leading power hitter with a team-high 18 home runs.
On the mound, the Cowboys have a 3.85 staff ERA and are led by closer Justin Friend who is 5-2 on the season with a 2.32 ERA and seven saves. Saturday starter Oliver Odle (5-4) leads the staff with 65 1/3 innings pitched and will be making his 12th start of the season.
Texas Tech-Oklahoma State Series
Friday's game against Oklahoma State will signal the 41st all-time meeting between the two schools and the 19th meeting at Dan Law Field. Oklahoma State leads the series 21-19 but Texas Tech has a 10-8 advantage in games played in Lubbock. The Cowboys swept the series a year ago in Stillwater in the regular-season finale and that handed the Red Raiders the No. 8 seed in the Big 12 Championship.
Looking Ahead
Texas Tech will wrap up a four-game homestand on Monday when the Red Raiders face the New Mexico Lobos at 3 p.m. at Dan Law Field. The game has been moved up in order to accommodate travel plans for the Lobos. Texas Tech will then head over to Roswell, N.M. on Tuesday afternoon for a 6:05 p.m. (CT) game against New Mexico State at New Mexico Military Institute.
