
Men's Golf in 13th-Place Tie after 18 Holes

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - With high rounds from the 27-team field, the Texas Tech men's golf team is tied for 13th place, two shots from the top 10. The Red Raiders finished the opening round from par-72 Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., with a 27-over 315. The top 10 teams in the field will advance to the 2007 NCAA Championships.
No. 41 Tech currently has leads over five squads of higher rank, including No. 12 Texas A&M and No. 28 TCU. The 23rd-ranked Louisville Cardinals currently sit atop the team leaderboard after firing a 6-over 294. Second-place Wisconsin and Texas sit nine shots back with an opening round of 303.
Senior Oscar Floren is currently pacing the Red Raider team, as he is the only Tech member to sit in the top 20. The Sweden native is tied for 18th after finishing the first day with 3-over par 75. The Red Raider remains one shot behind an eight-way tie for 10th place.
Sitting in a 43rd-place tie is freshman Will Griffin, finishing with a 78 (+6) during the first 18 holes. Sophomore Garrett Merrell is tied for 60th place after shooting an 8-over 80. Matt Smith, a freshman from Australia, had an opening round of 10-over 82. Tech's fifth member, Santiago Rivas, carded a 15-over 87 and is tied for 125th.
The individual leader, Derek Fathauer of Louisville, fired a 2-under 70 and is one shot ahead of three tied for second.
