LUBBOCK, Texas - Baseball season is officially underway at Texas Tech as the Red Raiders reported to classes earlier this morning and will begin a series of individual workouts on Thursday that will last until Feb. 1 when the first official team practice of the season begins.
This is the first season that the NCAA has mandated the first official team practice date and the first date of competition. All NCAA schools must wait until Feb. 1 to hold their first team practice of the year and the first official date of competition is Feb. 22. The Red Raiders will open the season with a four-game series against Northern Illinois at Dan Law Field (Feb. 22-24).
Texas Tech Head Coach Larry Hays also announced his 35-man roster for the 2008 season today that includes two mid-semester transfers. Joining the Red Raiders for the spring semester will be Owen Brolsma and Juan Rodriquez who are both expected to give the squad depth at two key positions. Brolsma, a RHP and native of Reno, Nev., transferred to Tech as a senior from the University of Nevada and will be enrolled in graduate school as he earned his degree from Nevada in Business Management. Rodriguez, a catcher and native of San Juan, Puerto Rico, comes to Texas Tech after spending last season at Lassen Community College in California.
