LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior QB Graham Harrell (Ennis, Texas) has been named the Walter Camp Football Foundation's National Offensive Player of the Week, the organization announced Sunday. Harrell led the Red Raiders to a 63-21 win over then-No. 18 Kansas in Lawrence on Saturday, accounting for six touchdowns.
Harrell, the nation's leading passer with 393.4 yards per game, completed 34-of-42 passes for 386 yards and five touchdowns as the No. 5 Red Raiders improved to 8-0 on the season. Harrell threw scoring passes of 55, 4, 7, 10 and 16 yards and added a rushing touchdown in Tech's fourth conference win of the year.
Harrell moved into fourth place on the NCAA career passing yardage list with 13,829 yards. He already has set school career marks in touchdown passes (117) and career touchdowns responsible for (129) and is the nation's active leader in each. Harrell has thrown 28 touchdown passes this season and rushed for six more.
Walter Camp, "The Father of American football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp - a former Yale University athlete and football coach - is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to 11 men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation - a New Haven, Conn., all-volunteer group - was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition selecting annually an All-America team.
