LUBBOCK, Texas - After taking a 2-0 lead midway through the match, Texas Tech surrendered three-consecutive goals to fall, 3-2, Sunday afternoon to TCU on Senior Day at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
Katie Hinds got the Red Raiders on the board first in the 41st minute, taking the deflection from a Taylor Lytle free kick and pushing it past TCU goalkeeper Kelsey Walters for her seventh goal of the season.
Lytle opened the second half with her fifth goal of the season as she netted a Megan Hoffert cross from the left side that was set up by Maegan Wilber in the 47th minute.
The Horned Frogs would begin their comeback a minute later as both Alex Mechalske and Jordan Calhoun would net goals off set pieces. Lizzy Karoly would connect on the game-winner in the 60th minute, taking the rebound from a Kaylie Garcia shot attempt and firing past Tech goalkeeper Tina Rincon.
"This is a disappointing loss for our seniors," Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "We were in total control at 2-0 and a series of set pieces undermined our best efforts on the day. The game came down to set pieces and TCU made theirs, and we weren't able to equal them on the other end."
The match was close throughout as neither team held a steady statistical advantage. The Red Raiders attempted 16 shots to TCU's 15, while the Horned Frogs held a 6-5 advantage in corner kicks. With the loss, Tech drops to 8-9-1 overall, while TCU improves to 12-3-2.
The Red Raiders have still not officially qualified for the Big 12 Championship as Oklahoma defeated Iowa State Sunday, moving the Sooners two points behind Tech for eighth place and the final championship spot. Oklahoma closes the regular season against Oklahoma State next Friday in Norman.
Tech needs either an Oklahoma State win or a tie to qualify. The Red Raiders have not advanced to the Big 12 Championship in consecutive seasons in school history.
"We feel we have done enough to qualify and are hopeful to play again in the postseason," said Stone. "It will be a long week of waiting."
The rest of the Big 12, except Tech and Colorado, will complete conference play next weekend. The Big 12 Championship will be held Nov. 5-9 at the Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
