Track Signs Eight New Athletes

LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track and field program will acquire eight newcomers, announced by head coach Wes Kittley. Five men and three women signed a National Letter of Intent to join the Red Raider team for next season.
For the men, the Red Raiders have added depth in the sprints, hurdles, distance, jumps and discus with the recruitment of Zach Dawson, Markus Henderson, Jamele Mason, Clay Smith and Darrell Roddick.
Dawson comes to Texas Tech from Big Spring High in Big Spring, Texas to compete as a distance runner. Last year he placed second in the 3200M and won the 1600M at the Region I-4A meet. At the state meet, he decided to only run in the 1600M where he finished with a strong third place and a time of 4:21.47. Dawson also showed his talent in distance running by placing third at the state cross country meet.
Henderson signs with Tech as a 200-meter dash competitor from Lewisville High in Lewisville, Texas. While competing at LHS, Henderson won the District 6-5A and Region I-5A meets. He was also competitive at the state track meet placing third in the 5A division with a time of 21.25 seconds.
Mason joins the Red Raiders as a hurdler from Spring Westfield High in Houston, Texas. Competing in District 16-5A, he won the 300M hurdles and placed second in the 110M hurdles. He decided to focus only on the 300M hurdles at the Region II-5A meet where he earned a first place finish. At the 2007 state meet, Mason finished fourth with a time of 37.13 in an extremely competitive 5A division.
Signing on to compete in the discus throw is Smith from Fredericksburg High in Fredericksburg, Texas. In 2007, Smith won the District 27-4A and Region IV-4A meets. He finished fourth at the state meet with a mark of 169-02.
Roddick transfers from South Plains College where he was a two-time outdoor All-American. He placed second in both the high jump and long jump at the 2007 NJCAA Championships. Roddick's career best in the triple jump is 51'-11" and 7'1" in the high jump.
Three women will join the women's track team in the fall. The team will benefit from the addition of two sprinters, and a distance runner.
Trudeann Clarke a transfer from New Mexico Junior College will add increased depth in the sprints. Clarke has personal best times of 24.16 in the 200M and a 54.89 in the 400M.
Terra Evans from Phoenix South Mountain High in Phoenix, Ariz. joins the women as a sprinter. Competing at the state meet in the largest division in Arizona, Evans finished with second places in the 100M and 200M with times of 11.71 and 24.24 respectively in the 5A-II division. She also competed on the South Mountain sprint relay which finished second at the state meet.
Brintney Green signs with the women's team from Spring Westfield in Houston, Texas. As a freshman she placed third in the 800M at the state meet in the 5A division. In 2006, she made another appearance at the state meet placing second. Last year, she easily won the District 16-5A 800M then finished seventh in Region II-5A which kept her from making her third appearance at the state meet. Also, she notably placed third in the 2007 5A state cross country meet.
