Sophomore Kerryn Potgieter Remains Unbeaten in No. 5 Singles

LUBBOCK, Texas - The women's tennis team returned from Provo, Utah, after suffering back-to-back losses to No. 49 Boise State, 5-2, and No. 58 BYU, 4-3. The Lady Raiders fall to 6-3 on the season, and will wrap up their final series of non-conference play next weekend against SMU and TCU.
In doubles action this weekend the team struggled to find a break as they were swept in all three positions. The No. 1 duo of Kelsy Garland and Samantha van der Drift ended their win streak on Friday losing 8-6 to the Broncos' Polina Kokoulina and Pichitira Thongdach, and to the Cougars' Anastasia Surkova and Jenny Miccoli on Saturday, 8-3.
Looking for some redemption in singles, Texas Tech came out strong in both matches. Senior captain Janet Durham went 2-0 on the weekend defeating Jana Mackova (BSU) and Elizaveta Ezhova (BYU) in straight sets. Sophomore Kerryn Potgieter continued her undefeated streak at No. 5, taking down Klaudia Wlodarczyk (BSU), 6-3, 6-2, and Chie Hayasaka (BYU), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Potgieter advances her record to 8-0 in duals play.
Freshmen Garland and Simone Templeton also faced their first hiccup in singles as both were handed their first losses of the season. Garland fell in straight sets to No. 81 Bianca Jochimsen from Boise State, and to Kristina Doerr of BYU. Templeton went 1-1 losing to the Broncos' Kokoulina, 7-5, 6-4, but quickly recovered over the Cougars' Dolly Chang winning 6-3, 6-2.
Tech next travels to the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex to meet SMU on Sat., March 1, followed by TCU on Sun., March 2. For complete results, log on to the women's tennis page at www.texastech.com.
