LUBBOCK, Texas - Following a strong start to the Tom Stone era, the Texas Tech soccer team held its annual banquet Friday night, where team awards were presented.
"It was a fun evening and well deserved for our team as they have embraced our collective pursuit of building this program," Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "It was a nice opportunity to reflect on our 2007 season and hand out the individual awards as voted on by the players."
The awards were presented as follows:
Most Valuable Player: Priscilla Esquivel. Playing as the Red Raiders' senior leader, Esquivel connected on two goals on the season, while also providing an assist. Esquivel finished her career among the top 10 in points and goals atop Tech's career list.
Most Valuable Offensive Player: Priscilla Esquivel
Most Valuable Defensive Player: Brittney Harrison. Making the change from forward to defender, Harrison was key in close matches against Texas and Colorado early in the season. Despite playing on the back line, Harrison was able to connect on three goals and provide two assists, earning her a selection to the All-Big 12 Second Team.
Most Improved: Jennifer Kammerer. Playing in all 17 matches, Kammerer scored her only goal Sept. 9 against Texas-San Antonio and was a strong force on the Red Raider backline.
Newcomer of the Year: Halie Cdebaca. Coming into the 2007 season as an unknown, Cdebaca's 1,342 minutes was third-most on the team. Cdebaca, a walk-on from Lubbock, couldn't have connected on her lone goal at a better time, Oct. 12 versus Iowa State, helping break a ten match losing streak to the Cyclones.
The night also served as a final good-bye to seniors Kim Cypert and Esquivel. The duo endured three coaching changes during their time as Red Raiders and will be greatly missed.
"This was one last chance to honor our seniors who have given back plenty to this program during their careers at Texas Tech," Stone said. "Kim Cypert and Priscilla Esquivel served as excellent leaders and played their hearts out for the 2007 team right down to the final minute of our season."
Tech finished the season 7-8-2, qualifying for the Big 12 Tournament for the first time since 1999. The Red Raiders' 5-4-1 conference finish was also the school's best since 1996.
