SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Ben Petralli's two-out, two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh lifted the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles to a come-from-behind win over Texas Tech late Sunday afternoon in the UTSA Baseball Classic at Wolff Stadium.
The loss drops Texas Tech to 1-2 on the season while Oral Roberts improves to 4-0. Texas Tech will wrap up play in the UTSA Baseball Classic on Monday afternoon as the Red Raiders will face host UTSA at 2 p.m.
Oral Roberts took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Tech starter Nate Karns was unable to find the strike zone. Karns walked three consecutive batters with two outs in the frame including Michael Notaro with the bases loaded, allowing Adam Younger to walk home from third.
The Oral Roberts didn't last as the Red Raiders responded with two runs in the top half of the second to grab a 2-1 lead. Redshirt freshman catcher Monk Kreder evened the game with a sacrifice fly to center that allowed Jason Seefeld (hit-by-pitch in the second at-bat) to score from third. Junior second baseman Willie Rueda pushed Tech into the lead with key two-out single to center that scored Taylor Ashby.
Chris Richburg's first home run of the season extended the Tech lead to 4-1 as he blasted a two-run shot to center field in the top of the third. His two-run dinger came on the heels of a leadoff single by sophomore third baseman Joey Kenworthy. Kreder made the lead 5-1 when he knocked in his second run of the game as he smashed a double to center that allowed Seefeld to score all the way from first.
After Oral Roberts plated single runs in the third and fourth innings to pull within two, junior right fielder Roger Kieschnick delivered the first pitch of the fifth inning over the right field wall. The home run was his second of the day as he belted a solo shot earlier in the first game against Army.
The Golden Eagles regained the lead in the bottom half of the seventh as Tech reliever Zach Stewart couldn't close the door with two outs as he walked Adam Younger with the bases loaded and gave up a two-RBI single to Ben Petralli. Petralli's single through the left side scored Juan Martinez and Brendan Duffy and gave ORU a 7-6 lead.
James Leverton (0-1) suffered the loss for Texas Tech as he gave up three runs on two hits over one inning of relief work. Dale Reneau (1-0) picked up the win in relief for ORU as he held the Tech offense scoreless over five innings and allowed just three hits.
