LUBBOCK, Texas - What may appear to be a vacation for the No. 16 Texas Tech men's golf team will be anything but as the Red Raiders open their spring season in Waikola Village, Hawai'I, as part of the University of Hawai'i-Hilo Intercollegiate Feb. 6-8 at the Waikola Village Golf Course.
The competition will be stiff for Tech, which enjoyed one of its best fall campaigns in school history with three team titles and two individual medals. Besides the Red Raiders, the par-70 course will welcome seven other top 50 schools that will be trying to get their hands on the team title in a crowded 18-team field. Included in that group are three top 10 schools - No. 4 Georgia Tech, No. 8 USC and No. 10 Stanford. Oregon State, TCU, Arizona State and Oregon round off the top 50 teams in the field, while fellow Big 12 schools Colorado and Oklahoma are also competing.
Tech hopes to build on the momentum it gained from a successful fall campaign, including a solid showing at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate in its last tournament. The Red Raiders, behind the efforts of individual medalist Sergio Franky and two other top five finishers, came in at 21-under 831 to claim the title among 16 other teams.
Sophomore Will Griffin, 71.57 fall stroke average, will carry the Red Raiders' highest fall average into the event this week. He will be joined by Santiago Rivas (72.27), Garrett Merrell (73.83) and Franky (72.80). Also competing will be Chris Ward, a midseason transfer from No. 6 Oklahoma State, who carded a 73.67 fall stroke average with the Cowboys.
Action is set to tee off Wednesday at 11 a.m. CT. Results can be found on www.golfstat.com or at www.texastech.com.
