LUBBOCK, Texas - Behind freshman Sergio Franky's one-under 71 and Will Griffin's even-par 72, No. 19 Texas Tech carded a nine-over 297 to move up two spots to an eighth-place tie Saturday at the talent-laden Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga. Final play was suspended late due to inclement weather.
Round two results are not completely final as the final group was at the tee box of the 18th hole when play was called. As it stands, No. 30 Mississippi is currently in the lead at seven-under 569. No. 17 Tennessee-Chattanooga and top-ranked Georgia are six strokes back in a tie for second at one-under 575. Georgia State (577) is in fourth place, followed by Eastern Michigan (585), Kennesaw State (586), Tech and Clemson (593). The bottom portion of the team standings are rounded off by Mercer (596), Michigan (598), South Alabama (599), Mississippi State (603) and Purdue (610).
Franky got off to a hot start to lead Tech on the front nine. The freshman birdied four of the first six holes to stand four under after nine holes. Griffin started slowly but came on strong on the back nine to come in at an even par. Both Franky (71-73 - 144) and Griffin (72-72 - 144) are in the top 20 in the individual standings with an even-par 14th-place tie. Sophomore Matt Smith finished the round with another 76 to stand at 152. Santiago Rivas recorded a 78 for the second consecutive day to finish the round at 156. Garrett Merrell had some struggles on the day before coming in at 157 (75-82 - 157). Freshman Nils Floren turned in a second-straight 75 to sit at 150 while competing unattached.
