SETTING THE SCENE
Texas Tech won't have much time to ponder its heartbreaking series loss to No. 13 Texas over the weekend as the Red Raiders open a two game non-conference series against the UC-Riverside Highlanders on Monday evening at Dan Law Field. First pitch for the Monday opener is set for 6:05 p.m. and the series will conclude with a 3 p.m. game on Tuesday afternoon.
After suffering a 22-6 blowout on Thursday night in the series opener, the Red Raiders came firing back on Friday night and posted a 7-5 win over the Longhorns to even the series at one game each. Texas struck for four runs in the top of the first inning on a pair of two-run home runs and held on for a 4-3 series-clinching win. Texas Tech had the winning run on second in the bottom of the eighth and the tying run on second in the bottom of the ninth but could not find a clutch hit in either situation. The series win marked the first over Texas Tech in Lubbock since the 2004 season.
The UC-Riverside Highlanders played just one game over the weekend, a 9-4 win over Harvard, and enter the midweek series with a 5-11 overall record. UC-Riverside won the 2007 Big West Championship over powerhouse Cal State Fullerton and is coached by Doug Smith.
Both games of the UC-Riverside series will be carried live on the Texas Tech Sports Network (KKAM 1340 in Lubbock) with Robert Giovannetti and Matt Miller calling the action live from Dan Law Field. Live audio and video will be available on the official website of Texas Tech Athletics, www.texastech.com. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Texas Tech Athletics Ticket Office at (806) 742-TECH or at the Dan Law Field Box Office on game day.
