LUBBOCK, - Women's tennis returns to action this weekend hosting a pair of conference matches against Missouri this Friday, March 28, at 5 p.m., followed by No. 67 Colorado on Sunday, March 30, at noon. The team looks to improve its 1-2 Big 12 record as Tech goes into both matches evenly matched in singles and doubles with both opponents.
Last weekend at the McLeod Tennis Center the Lady Raiders suffered a 7-0 sweep by the No. 3 Baylor Bears. With their top player sitting out of the singles line-up due to illness, several positions were filled with new faces. Freshman Kelsy Garland played No. 1 singles for the second time this season, with the remainder of the team moving up one spot, respectively. Freshman Laura Ring made her debut at No. 6, but fell short of the win to BU's Karolina Filipak.
This weekend the lineup will return to normal with Samantha van der Drift back at No. 1, and the rest of the players falling into their respective singles positions. Doubles will also be the same as van der Drift and Janet Durham play at No. 1, Brenna Jackson and Kerryn Potgieter fill No. 2, and Garland and Simone Templeton round out No. 3.
The Tigers head to the South Plains after knocking out their first Big 12 win over Kansas, 4-3, putting their record at 9-6 on the season, 1-2 in conference. Tech leads the series over Mizzou, 8-2, after winning last season 6-1 in Columbia, Mo. The Buffaloes moved up one spot in the rankings from last week after narrowly missing No. 27 Louisiana State, 4-3. Before the loss Colorado was on a five match win streak, including four straight sweeps, and currently hold the series advantage over the Lady Raiders after winning last season in Boulder.
The weekend's promotions include free t-shirts, water bottles, "Serving for Dough" contest between doubles and singles, "What's in the Box" contest for Tech memorabilia, and free pizza sponsored by Dominoes. Friday's match is also sponsored by Murphy's Pub and RSC Rentals.
