COLUMBIA, Mo. - Three Missouri runs in the bottom of the sixth proved to be the difference as the Tigers (36-12, 3-4) edged by Texas Tech softball 5-3 amidst cold and blustery conditions Saturday afternoon.
Tech (13-30, 3-6) battled back from an early 1-0 deficit and held a 3-2 lead until the Tigers got hot in the bottom of the sixth to squeak by the Red Raiders for the win.
Mizzou struck the first blow in the contest in the bottom of the second and took the early 1-0 lead on an Amanda Renth home run. Tech toughened up and held the Tigers scoreless through the next two innings. Liz Eimen came up big in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run double that scored Megan Shupp and Jennifer Bowers to give the Red Raiders a 2-1 lead.
After Missouri scored on a sacrifice fly in the fifth to tie the game, Montan Patin blasted her fifth home run of the season with nobody out to give Tech the 3-2 lead and a promising start to the inning. The Tigers rebounded from the blow and put the next three Red Raiders down in order to put a stop on a potentially-promising inning.
On came the sixth, and Mizzou's bats came alive with five big hits that resulted in three runs to put the Tigers up 5-3 going into the seventh. Leah Legler singled with two outs to give the Red Raiders some hope, but Mizzou promptly retired the last hitter and sealed the win.
Eimen finished 1-3 with two RBI to lead the way for Tech, while Legler, Patin, Jennifer Corkin and Whitney Riley all added a hit in three trips to the plate. Sophomore Ashly Jacobs (6-11) took the loss in the circle despite throwing the complete game.
The same two teams will be back in action tomorrow as the Red Raiders look to split the series. First pitch is scheduled for noon with up-to-date action available via www.texastech.com.
