LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech Softball returned home to the friendly confines of Rocky Johnson Field Tuesday, where it continued its home field dominance as it scored two victories over the Roadrunners of UT-San Antonio, 6-1 and 2-0, behind solid pitching performances from Ashly Jacobs and Alex Watkins, who gave up just one hit in a complete-game shutout in game two.
The Red Raiders (15-31) struck first in game one on a two-run home run by Montana Patin, her sixth of the season, to give Tech the early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Both teams were forced to go three up and three down in the second. UTSA (18-22) managed to get a run on the board in the third off a home run by Cassie Miller. Tech followed up with a run of its own courtesy of a single by Patin to score Whitney Riley, who doubled earlier in the inning.
Tech's pitching, led by Jacobs and with Watkins in relief would not allow another run on the day. Catcher Robyn Wike singled to score Eilzabeth Eimen in the bottom of fourth to make the score 4-1. The Red Raiders would add two more in the bottom of the fifth. Devin Zaragoza doubled to score Leah Legler, and a sacrifice fly by Patin brought home Zaragoza to make the final score 6-1.
In game two, the bats picked up right where they left off early for the Red Raiders as they picked up two runs in the bottom of the first on a two-run single from Jennifer Corkin . The Roadrunners managed to pick up its only hit of the game in the fourth but she was thrown out a short time later as she tried to steal second.
The score held at 2-0 for the remainder of the game as Watkins continued to dominate UTSA hitters en route to a career-high eight strikeouts to improve to 1-4 on the year.
Patin went 2-4 on the day with four RBI. Corkin also finished 2-4 and added two RBI of her own. Zaragoza and Wike each contributed an RBI on the day. Jacobs struck out two in the game-one win to better her mark to 7-12.
The Red Raiders now head deep into the heart of Texas as they battle the Texas Longhorns on Thursday, followed by a pair of games with the Baylor Bears in Waco Saturday and Sunday. Fans can follow the action on the Texas Tech softball page at www.texastech.com.
