It had been seven years and 14 games since Tech last beat Nebraska and 11 years since the Red Raiders last beat the Cornhuskers at home, but on a blustery Saturday afternoon the Red Raiders beat Nebraska 7-0 at Rocky Johnson Field.
With the win, Tech improves to 10-27 and 2-4 on the season. Things started slow for both teams as they each went three up and three down through the first one and a half innings. In the bottom of the second, Tech got things going when Jennifer Corkin swung on the first pitch sending it out of the park for her second home run of the season to give the Red Raiders the early 1-0 lead. The Huskers tried to get something going in the top of the third when Julie Brechtel singled and advanced to second on an error. However, Ashly Jacobs continued to pitch well retiring three of the next four batters to hold the score at 1-0.
The bottom of the third provided a lot of action when Leah Legler doubled down the left field line with one out. Zaragoza followed with a hit of her own when she singled to right field scoring Legler. Montana Patin followed with a single. Zaragoza scored Tech's final run of the inning on a catcher's interference call.
Jacobs continued to dominate in the circle in the top of the fourth putting Nebraska down in order. In the bottom half of the inning, Legler singled up center with two outs for her 41st hit of the year. Zaragoza then doubled to left scoring Legler from first for her career-high second RBI on the day.
After putting the Huskers down in the top of the fifth, the Red Raiders put two more runs on the board courtesy of a two-run single by Jennifer Bowers to make the score 6-0. Legler singled to center for her third hit on the day in the bottom of the sixth and scored on a Patin single to make it 7-0. The top of the seventh proved no different for the Huskers as Jacobs set them down without a run to finish the game.
Legler had a huge day going 3-4 with three runs scored. Zaragoza was 2-4 with 2 RBI, while Patin was also 2-4 with an RBI. Bowers went 1-3 for the afternoon and drove in two runs. Jacobs gave up three hits and struck out three to pick up her first shutout of the season and improve to 4-9 on the year.
The Red Raiders will complete the series against the Huskers tomorrow with the first pitch scheduled for noon. Fans can follow the action at www.texastech.com.
