Backed by a Rocky Johnson Field attendance record of 771, the Texas Tech Red Raiders defeated the Nebraska Cornhuskers 2-1 to complete the series sweep on Sunday afternoon. It took extra innings, but in the bottom of the 10th Leah Legler slid home on a Nebraska error to score the winning run and give Tech its first-ever sweep of the Cornhuskers.
Tech (11-27, 3-4) received a boost from some of its biggest fans as the South Plains Girls Fastpitch League helped pack the park. Both pitchers started off strong through the first three innings giving up no runs. In the top of the fourth the Huskers took the lead on a Julie Brechtel single to put the score at 1-0. The Red Raiders tied things up in the bottom of the fifth when Legler singled to bring in Jennifer Bowers making the score 1-1. The action remained deadlocked through seven forcing the game to extra innings.
The eighth and ninth innings provided no change in the score as both teams set each other down without a run. Ashly Jacobs, who came on in relief, maintained control through the top of the 10th after the Huskers Mullin was placed on second with international tiebreaker rules in effect. Jacobs sent three of the next four batters back to the dugout without giving up a run to give Tech the chance to take the game in the bottom of the inning.
With Whitney Riley placed on second, Legler drew a walk and Devin Zaragoza reached on a Husker error. With one out and the bases loaded, Montana Patin reached first on a fielder's choice which advanced Zaragoza to second and Legler to third. Jennifer Corkin grounded to the Nebraska pitcher, but her bobble and error allowed Legler to slide home and seal the 2-1 victory for the Red Raiders 2-1.
Legler and Bowers each went 1-4 on the day scoring a run a piece. Legler had the lone RBI on the day. With the win, Jacobs improves to 5-9 on the season.
Next up for the Red Raiders will be a Tuesday double header with Texas State on April 8. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT.
