LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech soccer team completed its preseason schedule Saturday morning with a 0-0 draw with North Texas at the John Walker Soccer Complex. Because the match was an exhibition match, the two teams did not play an overtime period.
The Red Raiders would have an opportunity to get on the board in the match's closing minutes, but a Maegan Wilber shot attempt from the top of the box hit off the left goalpost and Tech could never mount another offensive attack.
The match did serve as an opportunity for some of Tech's returners such as Brittney Harrison and Taylor Lytle, who is returning from a season-ending knee injury in 2007, to get their first action of the preseason. Freshmen Lexi Castellano, Kendyl Mygatt, Hope Hanson and Kacy Hardie also saw significant playing time.
Tech attempted 13 shots to North Texas' nine and four corner kicks to the Mean Green's three. Tech goalkeeper Tina Rincon collected four saves in the tie.
"Still being in the preseason, I felt good about the progress we made today," Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "North Texas is a very good team and is extremely athletic, so it was good to see that we could stay with them. Overall, I thought our players did a good job and hopefully it will pay off when we start the regular season next Friday."
North Texas ended the 2007 season with a 15-8 overall record, falling in the Sun Belt Conference Championship for an automatic bid into the NCAA Championship.
The Red Raiders begin their 2008 regular season next Fri., Aug. 22, at home against Lamar. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
