PLAYER FLASHBACK
Maury Buford holds the distinction of being the last Texas Tech punter selected in the NFL draft. Actually, he's the only punter in school history to receive the call. Buford played at Texas Tech from 1978-81 where he set the school record for career yard average wth 43.2 yards per punt (broken in 2006 by Alex Reyes by 0.1). He led the Red Raiders in punting each year, averaging over 40.0 yards per punt during each of his four seasons. Buford's consistency didn't go unnoticed. He was selected in the eighth round of the 1982 draft by the San Diego Chargers. He spent three seasons in southern California, before latching on with the Chicago Bears in 1985. What a great time to be a Bear. Chicago won the Super Bowl that season, and Buford had a front-and-center role in the Super Bowl Shuffle rap video the team did that year -- he was the cowbell ringer. Buford spent nine seasons in the NFL, including three with San Diego (1982-84), five with Chicago (1985-86, 89-91) and one with the New York Giants (1988).
DAILY "DID YOU KNOW"
