LUBBOCK, Texas - Brittney Harrison connected on her team-high seventh goal of the season in double-overtime, propelling the Texas Tech Soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Oklahoma Sunday afternoon at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
After a scoreless first overtime, the Red Raiders immediately began the attack a minute into the period as Taylor Lytle took the ball on the left side and crossed it to Harrison, who then headed the ball into the right side of the net.
The win was the first for the Red Raiders in conference play this season as they are now 6-3-1 overall and 1-2-0 in Big 12. Oklahoma drops to 1-9-0 overall and 0-2-0 in conference.
"We knew this was a must-win game and that if were going to compete in the Big 12, we would have to take points from Oklahoma," Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "Thankfully, we did."
Tech had not previously won in overtime since 2005 when the Red Raiders defeated Sam Houston State, 3-2. The win was also Tech's first when trailing at the half this season as Oklahoma took the intermission lead with an open-net goal by Whitney Palmer in the 32nd minute.
The Red Raiders would tie the match early in the second half as Zhaleh Rezaie would take a combo pass from Taylor Lytle and Brittney Harrison and fire a one-touch shot to the near post for her third goal of the season in the 57th minute.
Lytle led the Tech attack the entire day, attempting a career-high seven shots, while providing both assists, which doubles her season total entering the match.
Harrison's goal to seal the match for the Red Raiders was her third game-winner of the season and sixth of her career, which moves her into sole possession of third place on the school's all-time chart. It couldn't have come at a better time, either, as the Red Raiders defeated the Sooners for the first time since 2000, which was also a 2-1 Tech victory at home.
"Overtime games, especially on Sundays, are all about heart and desire, and I think we showed plenty of that today," Stone added. "This win was there for the taking, but we had to close the deal. Taylor's ball and Brittney's finish was just what we needed."
Tech goalkeeper Tina Rincon added seven saves in the match, which moves her seven short of Megan Knauss for second all-time on the school's career saves list.
The Red Raiders were on the attack for most of the match, maintaining a 26-18 shot advantage and attempting six corner kicks to the Sooners' four.
Tech faces its first true weekend on the road next week, traveling to Kansas Oct. 3, and Missouri Oct. 5. The Red Raiders return to the John Walker Soccer Complex Oct. 10, to defend the Battle for the Brand trophy against Baylor.
