Kipyego Qualifies for NCAA Championships in the 5000M

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech senior Sally Kipyego won the women's 5,000M with a NCAA automatic qualifying time of 16:07.12 at the Texas Tech Invitational held at the Athletic Training Center.
Kipyego's time qualifies for the NCAA Indoor Championships in early March. Sophomore Lillian Badaru finished in second with a strong NCAA provisional time of 16:34.35.
One school record was set at junior Ozie Okolie threw a NCAA provisional mark of 66'-3.75". The distance is also a new ATC record and personal best for Okolie.
For the second week in a row, Tech won the men's and women's shot put throw. Harrison Benjamin threw a NCAA provisional mark of 59'-7" on his way to the win and Patience Knight improved on last week's NCAA provisional mark with a throw of 54'-9.25".
Junior Janelle Appelhans won the women's long jump with a leap of 18'-9". Junior Veronica DiLullo finished in seventh with a mark of 18'-1".
Two Red Raiders finished in the top three of the high jump. Darrell Roddick, in his first event as a Red Raider, placed third clearing 6'-7". Justin Turner won the high jump with a mark of 6'-11".
Logan Culotta won the 3000M running a time of 8:48.31 and teammate Jeremy Kight ran a 9:03.31 to place fourth. The Lady Raiders had Kaci Westervelt and Katherine Preibe finish 5th and 6th respectively in the 3000M.
All-American Anthony Flemons won the men's long jump with a leap of 24'-3.75".
Sophomore Gilbert Limo won the men's mile with a NCAA provisional and personal-best time of 4:06.04
Two Red Raiders placed in the top eight of the 55M hurdles. Omo Osaghae was third with a NCAA provisional time of 7.20 and Jamele Mason ran a time of 7.53 finishing eighth. Tori Smith ran for the Lady Raiders and finished second with a time of 7.95.
Junior Jonisha Boleware finished third in the 200M with a time of 24.58. Freshman Markus Henderson ran a time of 21.76 placing fourth in the men's 200M.
Freshman Sage Lasater for the second week in a row placed second in the pole vault. She cleared a height of 12'-3.50", while teammate Jessie Gibbs vaulted 11'-9.75" for fourth place.
Freshman Amanda Dowdy, who also plays volleyball, finished second in the high jump clearing 5'-4.25".
In his first race of the season, Silas Kemboi ran a 2:31.66 to place second in the 1000M. Asia Diaz was second in the women's section with a time of 2:55.53 and Gladys Kipsang ran a time of 2:58.05 to place fourth.
Michelle Guzman ran a personal-best time of 5:06.00 in the mile to finish second.
The Lady Raiders had one competitor in the 55M as Terra Evans placed third with a time of 6.95.
Shannon Jackson, Addison LeMaster, Gladys Kipsang and Asia Diaz finished second in the 4x800 relay in time of 9:20.73. The men's squad of Silas Kemboi, Culotta, Jeremy Kight and David Boston placed third running a 7:57.53.
Jackson ran the 800M in a time of 2:21.33 finishing in second place. Christiana Graham ran a 2:25.12 placing sixth.
The women's 4x400 squad Evans, Jonisha Boleware, Smith and Trudeann Clarke won the race with a time of 3:44.97.
The men's `A' squad ran its first NCAA provisional time in the 4x400M relay. Rodney Mims, Henderson, Brandon Washington and Gil Roberts won the event with a 3:10.14. The `B' team of Bill Lawhorn, Jamaal Butler, Brandon Tucker and Mason finished in fifth place with a time of 3:14.69.
