LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech women's basketball team got the 2009-10 season underway today as it held its first official practice.
The Lady Raiders had 14 players suited up for their first practice, which was held in the practice gym at the United Spirit Arena. Tech veterans include seniors Tilmila Martin, Jordan Murphree and Ashlee Roberson, along with sophomores Jordan Barncastle and Kierra Mallard.
Making their return to the court were sophomore Kaylan Talley and freshman Lindie Kimbro as both were sidelined last year to recover from anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgeries.
Rounding out the 13-player active roster were five freshmen - Marissa Ashton, Chynna Brown, Mary Bokenkamp, Christine Hyde and Monique Smalls - and junior transfer Teena Wickett. Wickett, who transferred from Pepperdine, is waiting the outcome of a waiver submitted to the NCAA to determine whether she will be able to play this season or sit out the year and be eligible for the 2010-11 season.
Also practicing was sophomore Casey Morris, who transferred from California. Morris has to sit out the 2009-10 season due to NCAA transfer rules, but can practice with the team this year. Freshman Shauntal Nobles will redshirt this season after tearing her Achilles during preseason workouts.
The Lady Raiders will play an exhibition game against Lubbock Christian University on Mon., Nov. 9, at 7 p.m., at the United Spirit Arena before tipping off the regular season on Sat., Nov. 14, as they host Sam Houston State at 11:45 a.m.
