LUBBOCK, Texas - In its only exhibition game of the year, the Texas Tech women's basketball team dropped a 71-65 contest to cross-town foe Lubbock Christian University tonight at the United Spirit Arena.
In the first half, there were just two lead changes with Tech leading the first 13 minutes before LCU took the lead at 18-17 on a three-pointer by Ashley Coggins. The Lady Raiders regained the lead at 6:22 on a jumper by Ashlee Roberson. Tech's biggest lead of the half was 13, but went into the locker room at half with just a one-point advantage at 34-33.
LCU came out strong in the second half and got back the lead at 14:58 on a jumper by Severyn Smith. The Lady Chaps held Tech scoreless for a six-minute stretch before a basket by Kierra Mallard with 10 minutes remaining to put the score 44-41 in favor of LCU.
The Lady Raiders fought back and took a one-point lead at 55-54 as Jordan Murphree got a steal and handed it off to Monique Smalls for a layup with 4:16 to go, but that would be the last time Tech would have the upper hand. LCU went on to outscore Tech 17-10 to claim the win.
Murphree led Tech in scoring with 19 points and Roberson added 17. Roberson and Mallard both had a game-high eight rebounds.
Brittany Hampton led the Lady Chaps with 22 points, including a perfect 15-for-15 from the free throw line.
LCU outshot the Lady Raiders 44.4 percent to 37.9, and outrebounded them 40-29.
