Tech Travels To Florida For Lipton Invitational

LUBBOCK, Texas - Texas Tech softball heads to the sunshine state to participate in the Florida Lipton Invitational in Gainesville, Fla. Feb. 13-15. The Red Raiders will begin the tournament against Florida Atlantic and No. 2 Florida on Fri., Feb 13. Saturday, Tech faces Florida Atlantic in the morning before squaring off against Georgia Tech, and will conclude the tournament Sunday against South Alabama.
Breaking Out
Coming off an injury in 2008, redshirt sophomore Danielle Matthews has come out strong in 2009 hitting .417 with five hits, two RBI, and two runs scored. In addition to her accomplishments on the field, Matthews was selected to the Big 12 Chic-Fil-A Winter Community of Champions. This honor is awarded based on achievements in the classroom as well as community service and sportsmanship.
First Season Opening Win Since 2006
The Red Raiders opened up 2009 with a 12-4 win over Central Florida to mark their first season opening win since 2006.
Suiter Scores First Career Victory
Interim head coach Amy Suiter grabbed her first-career victory with the win over Central Florida.
Rookies Make Huge Impact
The Tech freshmen have made a huge impact early on in the 2009 season. Stephanie Drewry is hitting .429 with three hits and two RBI. Holley Gentsch hit her first career home run against Central Florida and doubled against Oregon. Ashley Hamada has two hits and scored one run, while Emily Bledsoe has been rock solid at shortstop and knocked in the first two runs of the season.
Legler Perfect Against Pena
Junior second baseman Leah Legler went 3-3 against Stanford pitcher Missy Pena who has a .61 ERA and 39 strikeouts on the season.

•Florida Atlantic leads the series, 1-0.
•The Florida Gators hold a 2-0 advantage over Texas Tech.
•This is the first ever meeting between the Red Raiders and Georgia Tech.
