GAINSEVILLE, Fla. - The seniors, Elizabeth Eimen, Megan Shupp and Alex Watkins, combined for six hits and all seven runs driven in as Texas Tech beat Pacific, 7-5, in day two action at the Florida Cox Invitational softball tournament. With the win, Tech moves to 4-12 on the season and Pacific falls to 6-7.
In what can be considered a statement game by the upperclassmen, Eimen when 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI, Shupp was 2-for-3 with a double, one RBI and a run scored, while Watkins was 2-for-4 (including a double and a home run), a run scored and four runs batted in. It was Watkins' home run blast, a 3-run monster which cleared the Gator scoreboard in left center field in the third, that set the tone for a team looking to turn the young season around.
Junior Ashly Jacobs (3-5) picked up the complete-game win as the right-hander suffered only one tough frame, when the Tigers put up five runs (four earned) on five hits in the fifth, but she settled down to solidify the effort in the final two innings. She scattered 10 hits, walked no one and fanned four.
Stephanie Drewry, Danielle Matthews and Ashley Hamada each picked up hits for Texas Tech, and Leah Legler and Drewry each scored twice.
The team is scheduled to face host No. 2 Florida this evening at 6 p.m., but games were behind by approximately 45 minutes. Action can be heard live via Gator radio by following the link found on the schedule page on this Web site.
Note: Weather in the nation's southern states is headed to Gainseville, but Watkins' home run may have helped delay it.
