LUBBOCK, Texas - As Texas Tech's only goalkeeper currently on its roster, Colleen Pitts knew she would spend every minute in goal this spring.
Fortunately for the Red Raiders, Pitts' time was well spent in consecutive shutouts as Tech defeated Houston, 1-0, and the University of Miami (Fla.), 2-0, Saturday at the Williamson County Regional Park in Austin, Texas.
Pitts had played in only one regular season match since Tech head coach Tom Stone's arrival prior to the 2007 season. With Tech having an established starter in Tina Rincon, Pitts redshirted the 2008 season allowing her to keep two years of eligibility remaining.
"Colleen has been waiting for her chance to play and was eager to get out there in real competition," Stone said. "She played with the confidence and composure you hope to see from an upperclassman, and she came up with a couple of big stops in both games."
In the day's opening match against Houston, Maggie Fete would notch the Red Raiders' only goal, taking a Lauren Clary long throw to net her first goal as a Red Raider.
Leanne Mihelich would begin the scoring for Tech against Miami, taking a Brittney Harrison pass and volleying the ball off the post before netting the rebound.
Tech's final goal came in the second half off a restart as Conner Williams served the ball towards the back post to a waiting Jordyn Young for the header. The duo were in there first match on the collegiate level as both freshmen enrolled at Tech in January after completing high school early.
With the win, the Red Raiders have yet to lose a spring match under Stone in his two seasons. The Red Raiders went a perfect 5-0 last year.
"It was a good day for the team," Stone said. "Miami is a very good team and very athletic all over the field, so it was a quality spring win for the team. Hopefully, we can continue to improve and play to this caliber."
The Red Raiders resume spring drills next weekend at the John Walker Soccer Complex, hosting UTEP at 6 p.m. Fri., March 6, and Oklahoma State at the same time the following day.
