LUBBOCK, Texas - Powered by an early goal by Brittney Harrison, the Texas Tech soccer team defeated UTEP, 1-0, Friday night in its first spring home match at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
In only the match's second minute, Harrison would take the deflection off a goalie clear and find the left side of the net for the only goal of the night for either team.
Harrison would have a chance to increase Tech's lead in the second half on a breakaway down the right side, but the senior's shot went left of the post.
Backed by goalkeeper Colleen Pitts' third-consecutive shutout, Tech would keep the Miners scoreless the entire way as Tech maintained a 8-3 shot-on-goal advantage.
The win moves the Red Raiders to 3-0 on the spring as Tech edged both Houston and the University of Miami (Fla.) last weekend in Austin, Texas.
"The result was pretty fortunate for us because I thought UTEP took it to us for most of the game," Tech head coach Tom Stone said. "This showed us how much we need to improve, but we will never complain about a win. I thought Brittney's goal was exactly what we needed to get the win."
The Red Raiders close the weekend Saturday night, hosting reigning Big 12 regular season champion Oklahoma State. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. at the John Walker Soccer Complex.
