PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - San Francisco's Doug Murray held the Red Raiders to just one run on five hits and struckout 10 over 8 1/3 innings to lead the Dons to a 2-1 win over Texas Tech on Friday evening at the 2009 Palm Springs Invitational.
The loss is the sixth-straight for the Red Raiders as they fall to 5-7 on the year and to 0-6 on their eight-game road swing through California. San Francisco snapped a five-game losing skid as they improved to 4-8.
The Red Raiders had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the ninth but San Francisco reliever Jonathan Abramson drew a force-out at second base on a ground ball by freshman Mason Macnoll to end the game. Abramson collected his first save after following a stellar effort by starter Doug Murray. Murray held Tech to just one unearned run in the first innings and scattered five hits over 8 1/3 innings of work. Through 131 pitches, Murray managed to strikeout 10 Tech hitters and retired 20 out of 21 Tech hitters from the second until the eighth inning.
Freshman third baseman Justin Berry drove in Tech's only run of the game in the top of the first with an RBI single that scored Michael Reed. The run was unearned due to a San Francisco fielding error.
The Don's picked up their first hit and first run of the night in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run by Zach Kim. The home run was the first of the year by Kim.
Connor Bernatz plated the game winning run in the bottom of the sixth with a sacrifice fly that scored Adam Clear.
Texas Tech will try and snap its six-game losing skid on Saturday morning when the Red Raiders take on Gonzaga in the third game of the Palm Springs Invitational.
