ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - No. 18 New Mexico broke open a one-run ballgame in the eighth with nine runs and went on to take a 15-7 win over Texas Tech in blustery conditions at Isotopes Park on Wednesday afternoon.
The loss drops Texas Tech to 12-18 on the season while New Mexico improves to 25-5.
A leadoff double by Mike Brownstein and a walk by Max Willett led to the Lobos staking 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first inning. The Lobos got two hits in the inning off Tech freshman right-hander who was making his second career start.
Freshman catcher Kevin Whitehead put the Red Raiders on the board with a two-run home run in the top of the third. Fellow freshman third baseman Justin Berry led off the inning with a single to center and Whitehead followed him up with his first career home run (right-center field).
Tech had a chance to take its first lead of the day in the fourth as the Red Raiders loaded the bases with nobody out. UNM reliever Ryan Escarcega, however, put the lid on the Tech rally as he retired the next three batters without allowing a single run and preserved the Lobo's 3-2 lead.
New Mexico pushed across two runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a three-run lead. The Lobos got four hits in the inning including RBI base knocks by Brian Cavazos-Galvez and Adam Courcha.
The Red Raiders made a late comeback in the top of the eighth as Tech generated three runs in the frame to pull within one at 6-4. The Lobos got out of the inning with the tying run at third base when Chris Richburg grounded into a fielder's choice to end the rally. Junior left fielder Michael Reed and pinch hitter Logan Leslie both drove in runs in the inning while Reed's RBI single was his second hit of the afternoon.
Colt Farrar (0-2) was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs on four hits and three walks over 2 2/3 innings.
Texas Tech returns to action on Friday night as the Red Raiders finally return home for a weekend series at Dan Law Field. Tech will take on No. 14 Texas A&M beginning at 6:30 p.m. The series continues at 5 p.m. on Saturday and concludes at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
